Grow Boldly to 420

Grow Boldly to 420

Why 420 Packaging Starts in October

Every April, some cannabis brands have full shelves on 420 and some are refreshing a freight tracker. The difference usually isn't the product. It's the calendar.
Growing, curing and packaging a crop can take up to six months. That puts the real 420 deadline in October, not April. Here's how the timeline works, where it breaks and how to plan your packaging so it lands with your crop.

The six-month math

Work backward from April 20 and the runway gets short fast.

↪ Before shelf: product needs to be in stores, not on a truck.

↪ Before that: packaging, labeling and compliance testing, which can take a few weeks.

↪ Before that: drying and curing, which can run several weeks on its own.

↪ Before that: flowering, often 8 to 11 weeks depending on the strain.

↪ Before that: veg, several more weeks.

Packaging can't be the last thing on the list. It has to run alongside the grow, so it's sitting on your dock when your product is ready for it.

The date nobody plans for

Chinese New Year falls on Feb 6, 2027. If your packaging is made overseas, that date matters more than almost any other on your calendar. Many factories ship their last orders in mid-to-late January, and workers don't fully return until mid-February. Orders placed late in the year can get stuck behind the backlog.

That's what turns a January order into a gamble. Order in October and your packaging is produced and moving before the slowdown starts.

Start with what sells: flower and pre-roll

For many brands, flower and pre-rolls carry the biggest 420 volume. That's where your packaging plan should start. Lock in:

▶  Flower jar SKUs and sizes

▶  Pre-roll formats: tubes, cases and multi-packs

▶  Counts based on last year's 420 sell-through, plus growth

▶  Compliance needs for every state you sell in, from child resistance to label space

▶  Getting these right first protects the volume that matters most.

Then complete the line

Concentrates, edibles and vapes see holiday demand too. Putting them on the same order as your flower and pre-roll packaging means one timeline, one freight plan and one partner to call when something changes. Fewer vendors, fewer handoffs, fewer surprises in March.

☑ Your October 420 checklist

✓  Pull last year's 420 sell-through by product and state.

✓  Set this year's volume targets.

✓  Confirm SKUs and compliance requirements for each state.

✓  Request quotes for flower and pre-roll first, then the rest of the line.

✓  Set your in-hand date, working backward from April 20.

✓  Sign your order by Nov 20 for custom packaging or Dec 4 for stock.
